Public Safety
Public Safety communications worldwide are becoming increasingly important to ensure that first responders communicate reliably during emergencies for the protection and preservation of life and property. Public Safety agencies like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Fire Code (IFC) have created safety in-building communication requirements and best practices. Local municipalities and authorities at different government levels in the U.S. are now mandating these safety codes for new and existing buildings and facilities.

PIM signals residing in the receiving bands of telecommunication systems interfere with actual Rx signals and with that, reduce the network's capacity. The amount of unwanted PIM signals is directly proportional to the carrier power in the RF path. While macro cells operate at high power levels, most in-building DAS networks use low antenna power levels because they employ multiple antennas. Compared to macro cells, each antenna needs to cover only a relatively small area. Does ubiquitous system noise supersede any PIM effects? Wolfgang Damm discusses causes of Passive Intermodulation (PIM), its effects on network quality and offers guidelines to ensure networks provide maximum bandwidth.

The advent of wireless with its tightly grouped, high power, high frequency signals and the associated high sensitivity receivers has created many unanticipated PIM (Passive Intermodulation) problems. PIM is caused by improper design of the passive, sharing transmission line by the receive signal. This brief overview describes a few of the problems and solutions encountered by Microlab/FXR in its efforts to supply PIM-free wireless components.
